Shaping a lasting legacy for Wallan
Bring Wallan’s native flora and fauna to life through public art.
The Watson Street Interchange Upgrade (WSIU) project team invites Expressions of Interest (EOI) from artists to develop and deliver a public artwork as part of the project’s legacy.
Following community consultation, the selected theme for the artwork is “Flora & Fauna”, highlighting the natural environment that makes Wallan unique, including local plants, trees, birds and wildlife.

Applications close at 11:59pm on Sunday 27 September 2026.

Community chooses Native Flora and Fauna for Wallan legacy artwork
The Wallan community has had its say, with Native Flora and Fauna receiving the most votes for the Watson Street Interchange Upgrade legacy artwork.
The artwork will celebrate the plants and animals that make the local area unique. It will form part of a new rest area on Watson Street, on the south-eastern side of the interchange, alongside the upgraded shared walking and cycling path.
The project team will now work with key stakeholders to plan the next steps and select an artist.
Thank you to everyone who shared an idea or voted. Your feedback will help create a lasting legacy for Wallan.
About the rest area
The new rest area will be located on Watson Street, on the south-eastern side of the interchange, alongside the upgraded shared walking and cycling path. It will provide a new place for the community to pause and enjoy the area while improving local connections through Wallan.
This new space will include a permanent public art installation, interpretive signage, and seating for people to stop, rest and enjoy the area.
The location has been carefully selected to:
- provide good visibility and access
- support safety and long-term maintenance
- minimise environmental impacts
- integrate with the new interchange infrastructure
- align with feedback from the Department of Transport and Planning and Mitchell Shire Council.
