From construction to connection

See how we've transformed Melbourne's west.

The West Gate Tunnel includes new twin 3-lane tunnels connecting an upgraded West Gate with 4 new lanes, to a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River – creating a second river crossing for the west.

New ramps connecting to Hyde Street in Yarraville allow for improved access to the Port of Melbourne for vehicles carrying dangerous goods that otherwise wouldn’t be able to use the new tunnels. A new 2.5km dedicated cycling path built above Footscray Road connects into paths to the Federation Trail and a new elevated extension of Wurundjeri Way delivers Melbourne’s first CBD bypass in 25 years.

Widening the West Gate Freeway

Rebuilt from the ground up, the West Gate Freeway was widened from 8 to 12  lanes alongside existing lanes to the sides or centre of the road, allowing works to continue while it remained open.

What we’ve built

  • An additional 4 through-lanes between the M80 Ring Road and the West Gate Bridge
  • Express lanes creating faster connections between the west and the city
  • New entrances into and exits out of the West Gate Tunnel
  • New ramps to Hyde Street, Yarraville, connecting trucks directly to local industry
  • Interchange upgrades at M80 Ring Road, Grieve Parade, Millers Road and Williamstown Road.

Two tunnels connecting the west

Two tunnels, up to 30m deep under Yarraville, connect the West Gate Freeway to the Maribyrnong River.

The outbound tunnel is 4km long and the citybound tunnel is 2.8km long.

Citybound tunnel – Bundawanh Tunnel

Drivers heading towards the city enter the tunnel from the West Gate Freeway just before Williamstown Road and exit near the Maribyrnong River in Yarraville.

Outbound tunnel – Eureka Tunnel

Drivers heading west can enter the tunnel near the Maribyrnong River and exit at the West Gate Freeway just east of Millers Road, South Kingsville.

Maribyrnong River bridges

A new bridge spans the Maribyrnong River in Footscray, connecting the tunnels to the port and city.

The iconic new bridge improves connections for trucks to the port, with new ramps directly to the port for direct freeway access. This means fewer trucks on inner west roads.

What we’ve built

  • A second river crossing over the Maribyrnong River to connect the tunnels with an elevated road at Footscray Road
  • Improved connections for trucks to the port by building ramps at MacKenzie Road and Appleton Dock Road for direct freeway access, meaning fewer trucks on local inner west roads
  • Walking and cycling paths for quicker and safer cycling to the city.

Elevated road above Footscray Road

Connecting the tunnels to the city, the 1.5km-long elevated road is up to 13m in height and is built atop pillars on Footscray Road, separating traffic coming from the tunnel and the inner west.

What we’ve built

  • A dual elevated carriageway with up to 3 lanes in each direction above Footscray Road
  • Ramps from the elevated road connecting directly into the port
  • A 2.5km veloway from Footscray to Docklands that provides an off-road route, removing 6 intersections for cyclists, making trips safer and quicker. It runs from Shepherd Bridge to the city side of Moonee Ponds Creek.

City connections

From the elevated road, new city connections to CityLink, the northern suburbs and the city, drivers from Melbourne’s west and regional Victoria now have more options and route choices.

What we’ve built

  • New connections between the elevated roadway and CityLink, Dynon Road and the existing Footscray Road
  • Widened Dynon Road and built a new dedicated bridge that will ensure a safe path for both pedestrians and cyclists separate from vehicles. Users can now safely cross Moonee Ponds Creek and the rail lines near North Melbourne station, and cyclists can tap into the broader cycling network.

Wurundjeri Way extension

The Wurundjeri Way extension is the first city bypass built in a quarter of a century. It connects Wurundjeri Way to Dynon Road with a new bridge over Dudley Street. It opened to traffic in October 2025, reducing the need for vehicles to travel through the CBD.

What we’ve built

  • Widened Wurundjeri Way by 1 lane in each direction between Dudley Street and Flinders Street
  • Extended Wurundjeri Way to the west, connecting into Dynon Road to the east of Moonee Ponds Creek, providing a bypass of the CBD

Hyde Street ramps

We’ve built 2 new connections from the West Gate Freeway to Hyde Street in Yarraville.

The Hyde Street ramps provide more reliable and direct connections from the West Gate Freeway to industry, the Ports and the west.

Trucks that are overheight or are carrying dangerous goods, which can’t use the tunnels, can now avoid residential streets by using the new Hyde Street ramps for trips to the port, local industry and fuel depots.

What we’ve built

  • A new exit for inbound traffic from the freeway to Hyde Street
  • A new entry for westbound traffic
  • Transformed the area around Hyde Street to create a greener and more connected west.
