Bundawanh and Eureka Tunnels

The 4km outbound tunnel is now known as the Eureka Tunnel, a symbol of the Australian worker and part of the new gateway to Ballarat and western Victoria created by the West Gate Tunnel.

The 2.8km citybound tunnel is now called the Bundawanh Tunnel, meaning ‘she dug’ in the language of the Bunurong people, the traditional owners of the land. The name is drawn from the Boonwurrung language phrase Bundawanh Kananha, which translates to ‘she dug with a digging stick.’

These names were chosen following a call for public submissions that attracted more than 3000 suggestions.
