The West Gate Tunnel Project’s Wurundjeri Way is now open to traffic providing a new way for people from the west to directly link into Docklands, the city and travel to the south east suburbs.

The new road connects Dynon Road in West Melbourne to Wurundjeri Way in Docklands, and will link up to the West Gate Tunnel once it opens in December.

This is Melbourne's first city bypass in 25 years, which will now help take thousands of vehicles off some of the city’s busiest thoroughfares including Spencer and King streets.

Tolls will not apply for cars on the Wurundjeri Way extension when travelling between Dynon Road and Wurundjeri Way.

Using the new Wurundjeri Way extension

Crews have built a new bridge over Dudley Street and a 1.5 km, four lane connection to Dynon Road, providing a city bypass and a more direct connection from the inner west to Docklands, the CBD and onto the south east suburbs.

In addition, Wurundjeri Way has been widened to three lanes in each direction alongside Southern Cross station through to Flinders Street.

Drivers heading towards the city on Dynon Road can now use the left slip lane to get onto Wurundjeri Way extension to continue southbound to merge onto Wurundjeri Way, near Marvel Stadium to get to the game or travel into Docklands and further onto the south-eastern suburbs.

Now drivers have the option to avoid busy King and Spencer Street when travelling inbound.

Once the road network is fully opened, more than 15,000 vehicles is expected to be using the new extension, reducing traffic on busy CBD streets.
