Major works underway
The Victorian Government is duplicating the Cranbourne Line, removing the last 2 level crossings on the line and have built a new Merinda Park Station – improving safety, reducing congestion and allowing for more trains, more often. Once complete, the Cranbourne Line will be completely level crossing free.
Major works are underway to remove the Camms Road level crossing by building a new road bridge over the rail line. This will reduce congestion for the 12,000 vehicles that pass through the crossing each day.
We’re building new walking and cycling connections along the new road bridge and surrounding areas to improve local connections to the station precinct. Approximately 300 trees and shrubs will be planted as part of the project, enhancing the local area.
The Victorian Government is also delivering 400 new and upgraded car parking spaces at Cranbourne Station as part of the Car Parks for Commuters Program.
The Camms Road level crossing will be gone for good in 2024, one year ahead of schedule.
Project benefits
- More reliable travel times
- 300 new trees and shrubs
- New walking and cycling connections
- More lighting to create safer spaces
Piling rig drilling into the earth.
Whats next
Until the end of the year, we will continue to relocate utilities and start works on the foundations for the new road bridge.
Works will also continue at Sharpe Street, which has been permanently closed to Camms Road to make way for the new road bridge.
Traffic management will be in place throughout the project. We're monitoring traffic conditions closely and continually reviewing our traffic management plan to minimise safely while we work.
Rail
Buses will replace trains on the Cranbourne Line between Dandenong and Cranbourne from Saturday 22 October until last service Sunday 23 October.
Road
Camms Road will be closed between Bourke Road and Cranbourne Place from 8pm Friday 21 October until 5am Monday 24 October and each night from 8pm to 5am from Sunday 20 November to Friday 25 November.
Detour via South Gippsland Highway, Duff Street and Bourke Road.
What we’ve been up to:
- established our work site to keep the community and our workforce safe
- preparing the area for construction
- relocating services to ensure we can safely lay the new bridge foundations.
Thank you for your patience while our crews work hard to prepare the area fornthe new road bridge.
As works continue you will start to see more construction vehicles around the project site
Excavators and trucks moving soil and materials
Vibrating rollers creating a firm foundation for us to build the new bridge
Traffic management to keep you moving safely through the area
Piling rigs drilling the bridge foundations
Changes to local roads
We'll need to change some local roads to make way for the road bridge.
Fairfield Street will extend under the new road bridge and connect to Murray Court. Drivers will be able to access Camms Road through the new roundabout at the intersection of Murray Court, Fairfield Street and Camms Road.
Access to Camms Road via Sharpe Street has permanently closed to make way for the new road bridge.
Drivers will still be able to access Camms Road via Circle Drive South and Highview Avenue. The detour will add 300 metres to the trip, an additional minute for drivers.
A roundabout will slow vehicles exiting the new road bridge while maintaining traffic movement and minimising wait times.

Plan ahead for upcoming travel changes in Cranbourne on Victoria's Big Build disruptions.
Temporary detour on new shared use path
A temporary detour will be in place between Hazlitt Court and Camms Road on the shared use path connecting Merinda Park and Cranbourne stations.
Sections of the new 4.25km walking and cycling path linking Lynbrook, Merinda Park and Cranbourne stations are open for pedestrians and cyclists to use.
To keep the community safe, the temporary detour will remain in place until construction of the Camms Road level crossing is complete in 2024.
The detour from Hazlitt Court will increase the distance travelled by about 600m from Merinda Park Station to Cranbourne Station.
