Construction is underway
Works are underway to remove 4 dangerous and congested level crossings at Coburns, Exford and Ferris roads in Melton and Hopkins Road in Truganina to make Melton boom gate free.
We’re removing the level crossings by building rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads and road bridges over the rail line at Ferris and Hopkins roads.
We’re also building a new modern and accessible Melton Station which will open in 2026, 2 years ahead of schedule.
The elevated Melton Station is being built with 4 platforms to accommodate Ballarat train services and provide dedicated platforms for services that will begin and end at Melton.
Construction is in full swing in the Melton Station precinct, with crews building the new 16m wide pedestrian through link and piling the foundations of the rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads.
We’re also steaming ahead at Ferris and Hopkins roads, where drivers, pedestrians and bike riders will benefit from the new road bridges and shared paths in some of the fastest growing communities in Australia.
Removing these level crossings will improve safety and ease congestion in Melton and Truganina, with drivers no longer held up by boom gates.
The 4 level crossings will be removed, and the new Melton Station will open in 2026.
Why these level crossings need to go
- About 73,000 vehicles travel through these crossings every day
- Boom gates are down for up to 28 minutes during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
- Up to 16 trains travel through these crossings during the morning peak (7am to 9am)
Upcoming works at Melton Station
Please allow extra travel time
We’ll work 24 hours a day, 7 days a week in the rail corridor to complete rail signalling works, demolish the existing pedestrian underpass and continue construction of the abutments and retaining walls from Friday 5 September to Monday 15 September.
Buses will replace trains between Bacchus Marsh and Caroline Springs from first service, Saturday 6 September to last service, Sunday 14 September.
To allow us to continue building the rail bridge beam supports, Exford Road will be closed between Staughton Street and Brooklyn Road from 8pm, Friday 5 September to 7am, Thursday 11 September.
Detours will be in place via Brooklyn Road in the north and Wilson Road in the south.
The footpath and pedestrian crossing east of Exford Road between Brooklyn Road and Creek Street will be closed from Thursday 11 September to late 2026.
Temporary station and September works
To minimise disruptions to passengers and to keep trains running as long as possible, we’re building a fully accessible temporary station.
This temporary station, on the northern side of the tracks near Exford Road, will open to passengers from Saturday 6 September.
When train services return on Monday 15 September, there will be changes to how you access the station platforms as we transition to the temporary station.
The temporary station will service passengers until we open the new Melton Station in 2026.

Temporary bus interchange
To allow us to build the new Melton Station, we've relocated the bus interchange to Brooklyn Road.
This temporary bus interchange will be in operation until the new station opens in 2026.
From Wednesday 20 August to late 2026 V/Line replacement coaches will leave from the northern side of the station.
Making progress in Melton
We’re continuing to take big steps towards making Melton level crossing free in 2026.
The new rail bridges over Coburns and Exford roads are taking shape after the first of 20 concrete piers and crossheads were poured onsite in June and July and concrete L-beams, which create the elevated rail bridges, lifted into place.
Coburns Road
- The Coburns Road rail bridge will be around 275m long and includes a 42.5m long steel bridge.
- The steel bridge components are coming from Tasmania and will be assembled on site and lifted into position later this year.
- The ground at Coburns Road has a layer of rock that provides a naturally strong base for the rail bridge to sit on.
Exford Road
- The Exford Road rail bridge will be around 67m long.
- L-beams that form the rail bridge started to arrive on site from Kilmore in July. The final 8 L-beams will be lifted into position over Exford Road later next year.
- The bridge will be supported by concrete piers and crossheads that you can see being built/poured onsite now.
- More than an Olympic-sized swimming pool of concrete has been poured on site to date (2500 cubic metres).
Melton Station
We’re progressing excavation for the new 16m wide pedestrian through link which will provide accessible entry to all 4 platforms from Staughton Street and Brooklyn Road.
In July the concrete beams that will span the through link, measuring up to 32m long, arrived from local Cobblebank manufacturer Westkon.
We’ve also started installing the first of 234 precast concrete wall sections which will form the structure for the earth embankment to support the 4 elevated platforms at the new station.
On Brooklyn Road, we’ve built a new roundabout at the intersection of Hazel Street to assist safe and easy bus movements to and from the new temporary bus interchange.

New Ferris and Hopkins road bridges taking shape
We're removing the level crossings at Ferris and Hopkins roads by building new road bridges over the rail line, creating safer connections to the Western Freeway and newly built residential areas.
The new road bridges at Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina are starting to take shape with crews finishing the foundations for the new bridges.
Ferris Road
At Ferris Road, Melton we’ve relocated essential underground services to make way for the new road bridge, and piling for the bridge foundations is now complete.
Works are continuing on both sides of the level crossing, including bridge foundation works and building the concrete piers that will hold the bridge beams.
When the Ferris Road project is complete, we'll plant more than 200 native trees and 45,000 shrubs, plants and grasses in the local area.
We're planting a variety of species including Lemon-scented gum, Melbourne Yellow Box, Blackwood Wattle and Drooping Sheoak.
Hopkins Road
In Truganina works are powering ahead at Hopkins Road with the piling of the road bridge foundations now finished.
Crews are building the walls that will elevate the bridge above the train tracks.
In the coming weeks, we'll lift the first bridge beams into place.
At Hopkins Road, we'll plant over 200 new native trees, including 39 Lemon Scented gum trees alongside the new shared path in Truganina.
We’ll also plant over 80,000 native grasses, shrubs, as well as seed more than 35,000 square metres as part of landscaping works
A new transport Superhub in the west
We’re creating a new rail superhub in Sunshine to untangle Melbourne’s most complex rail junction outside the CBD.
A $4 billion joint investment by the Australian and Victorian governments will involve major works spanning more than 6km from West Footscray to Albion.
With concept designs set to be released later this year, we’ll add 2 new platforms at Sunshine Station to unlock extra capacity for a future rail line to the airport and enable additional services for the growing communities of Melton and Wyndham Vale.
Delivering upgrades at Sunshine Station now will reduce future disruptions for both Melbourne Airport Rail and a future electrification of the Melton Line.
When works are complete by 2030, more trains will be able to travel through Sunshine every hour, providing improved access to Melbourne’s CBD through the new Metro Tunnel.
The new superhub will also make Sunshine Station the gateway to Melbourne’s booming west and Victoria’s regional areas, while enabling construction of an essential rail link to Melbourne Airport.
Major works on the new superhub at Sunshine will start in early 2026.
