Getting it done in Melton and Truganina

Trains have returned to the Melton Line, after crews wrapped up a 10-day construction blitz in Melton and Truganina – as part of works to remove 4 level crossings and deliver the new, modern and accessible Melton Station, set to open to passengers next year.

Crews worked around the clock on rail signalling, building foundations for 2 rail bridges, and demolished the former Melton Station building. A temporary station is now open for passengers, with access between the 2 platforms via a new pedestrian pathway.

Commuters can now also access 312 new parking spaces in the station’s north west car park, off Brooklyn Road.

During the works blitz, crews filled the old station underpass with more than 1800 tonnes of concrete and soil, relocated more than 18km of cables, and upgraded the Exford Road pedestrian crossing. At Exford Road, a giant piling rig dug 14 holes up to 10m deep, filled with concrete to form the foundations for the new rail bridge.

While trains weren’t running, 2 cranes weighing up to 800 tonnes lifted in 14 giant bridge beams for the new Ferris Road bridge in Melton. Sections of the Ferris Road and Hopkins Road bridge decks were also poured during the 24/7 blitz.

When the Melton level crossing removal project is completed next year, new rail bridges will take trains over Coburns and Exford roads and new road bridges will carry vehicles over the rail line at Ferris Road, Melton and Hopkins Road, Truganina.

The new Melton Station will open to passengers in 2026 and feature an open and airy pedestrian through link providing accessible entry to each of the 4 platforms.

Transport services in the west will also get a boost with the Melton Line Upgrade, increasing passenger capacity by 50% by allowing 9-car trains to run on the line from 2027, a year ahead of schedule.
