Inner-west level crossing removal works ramp up

Back to Newsfeed

Works are ramping up to get rid of 2 level crossings in Newport, and another in Altona, with crews set to work around the clock in the rail corridor in November.

As part of a 3-day construction blitz, crews will work 24/7 to complete important track and signalling works along the rail line, and build foundations for the new passenger rail bridge being built over Maddox Road and the new walking and cycling bridge at Champion Road.

Work will also continue on removing the Maidstone Street, Altona level crossing during this time.

To allow these works to safely take place, buses will replace trains on sections of the Werribee Line from late Thursday 13 November until the last service Sunday 16 November.

To keep the Werribee Line running during construction, trains will operate on a single track between Newport and Laverton stations when services resume from Monday 17 November, until late April 2026.

Passengers travelling to the city from Seaholme, Altona and Westona will travel by shuttle bus to Newport Station, where they can continue their journey to the city by train. Trains will run as normal along the Altona Loop for passengers travelling from the city.

Running the trains in this way ensures passenger services on the busy Werribee Line can continue to operate during major works, reducing the need for bus replacement services.

The Maddox Road and Champion Road level crossings will be gone by 2026 and Akuna Drive will be extended to link to a boom gate free Maddox Road.

Five level crossings are going for good in Melbourne’s inner west, at Newport, Altona, Spotswood and Yarraville, making the Werribee Line boom gate free by 2030.

Werribee Line Trains will run to an altered timetable from Monday 17 November to late April 2026.
