Asphalting underway on new Hopkins Road bridge

An important milestone has been reached in Truganina, with asphalting underway on the new Hopkins Road bridge.

More than 5000 tonnes of asphalt will be placed to form the surface of the new road bridge.

Up to 30% of the asphalt is Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement, a material that reduces waste by diverting old pavement from landfill.

In the coming weeks, crews will continue asphalting, line marking and installing new public lighting along the bridge.

Hopkins Road in Truganina will close at the level crossing for 3 weeks from late April to mid-May, allowing crews to safely continue working on the new road bridge.

Landscaping will also transform the surrounding area, with more than 80,000 native plants, trees and shrubs to be planted.

The dangerous and congested Hopkins Road level crossing will be gone for good and the new road bridge open to traffic in 2026.

Works are also underway to remove three more level crossings at nearby Ferris, Coburns and Exford roads in Melton, and build a new Melton Station, which will open to passengers in 2026.
