Another level crossing will be gone from the Werribee Line on Tuesday 15 September, following a 2-week construction blitz to make Newport level crossing free.
Maddox Road will be closed from 6am, Friday 28 August until 7pm, Tuesday 15 September, while crews work around the clock to finish installing track and rail infrastructure on the new freight rail bridge and remove the at-grade freight rail line.
Works will also soon start to build a new 400m pedestrian and bike path along the rail line between Maddox Road and Ross Road. The path will provide the missing link for a safe off-road connection from Newport Station to Altona North.
Crews have been working to complete the third and final rail bridge, with all 24 beams, each weighing approximately 110 tonnes, now installed.
In April, 2 new rail bridges were completed, enabling passenger trains to travel over Maddox Road. The Akuna Drive link road and the pedestrian and cycling bridge at Champion Road also opened, keeping locals connected and moving safely through the area.
When Maddox Road reopens in September, freight trains will travel over the new rail bridge, separating trains from drivers, pedestrians and cyclists for good.
Five level crossings are going for good in Melbourne’s inner west, at Newport, Altona, Spotswood and Yarraville, boosting safety and easing congestion throughout the area.
