The Mordialloc Freeway is now providing a safer and more reliable journey, and improving connectivity in Melbourne’s southeast. The shared walking and cycling path provides an uninterrupted path from Aspendale Gardens to Dingley Village, improving access to community spaces like Braeside Park and Chadwick Reserve.

The Mordialloc Freeway opened on Sunday 21 November 2021, 4 weeks ahead of schedule.

January 2020-Started works to install new drainage for the Freeway

February 2020- Continued preparing the ground ahead of bringing in the Freeway’s foundations — February 2020- Continued preparing the ground ahead of bringing in the Freeway’s foundations.

February 2020- Set up environmental controls and built the temporary working platform in Waterways

March 2020- Place material to strengthen the ground below the new Freeway

March 2020- Continued building the foundations for the new bridges over the intersecting local roads

March 2020- Started bringing in almost 3 million tonnes of material the build the foundations of the Freeway.

June 2020- Started installing the piles for the 400-metre twin bridges over the Waterways wetlands

July 2020- Started installing retaining wall panels for the bridges over the intersecting local roads.

July 2020- Finished building the base, walls and roof of the pedestrian underpass at Park Way.

August 2020- Laid more than 28,000 tonnes of asphalt for the new surface of the Freeway

August 2020- Build the new turning lanes to enter and exit the Freeway at Governor Road and installed the piles for the bridge.

August 2020- Finished installing the piles for the 400-metre twin bridges over the Waterways wetlands.

September 2020- Installed the traffic lights for the new intersection with the Dingley Bypass.

October 2020- Installed the first 12 of 252 bridges beams for the Freeway over Old Dandenong Road

Mordialloc Freeway project - Traffic using the new lanes on Wells Road where it intersects with Thames Promenade. There are cars travelling along Wells Road — January 2021- Built the new intersection at Wells Road and Thames Promenade, widening the road and adding new lanes.

Lifting the beams into place for the bridge over Centre Dandenong Road. — February 2021- Installed the bridge beams for the road bridge over Centre Dandenong Road.

March 2021- Opened the new 6-metre-wide pedestrian underpass at Braeside Park

Continuing to install the beams for the 400-metre twin bridges over the Waterways wetlands — March 2021- Installed the beams for the 400-metre twin bridges over the Waterways wetlands

Installing the safety barriers between Old Dandenong Road and the Dingley Bypass — April 2021- Installed the safety barriers on the freeway between Old Dandenong Road and the Dingley Bypass.

May 2021- Installed the bridge beams for the road bridge over Lower Dandenong Road with a 750-tonne crane

Continuing to install the 75% recycled plastic noise walls — June 2021- Started installing the 75% recycled plastic noise walls along the freeway.

Asphalting in progress on the Mordialloc Freeway near Governor Road — July 2021- Continued asphalting works along the freeway.

View of the new shared walking and cycling path and 75% recycled noise walls south of Centre Dandenong Road — August 2021- Continued to build the 8km long shared walking and cycling path along the freeway.

September 2021- Started installing the acrylic panels along the bridges on the freeway

October 2021- Completed line-marking along sections of the freeway

October 2021- Removed the temporary working platform under the 400-metre twin bridges over the Waterways wetlands — Oct 2021 - Removed the temporary working platform under the 400-metre twin bridges over the Waterways wetlands

Nov 2021- Commenced painting the mural in the 6m wide pedestrian underpass at Braeside Park

November 2021- Completed works to tie in local roads to the freeway
