Pakenham Roads Upgrade

Changes to the way you travel through the area

By mid-2026, major works on the Racecourse Road Upgrade will be complete, with 2 lanes open in both directions all the way from Koo Wee Rup to Henry Street, upgraded intersections at Bald Hill Road and Campbell Street, and a network of new paths creating pedestrian and bicycle connections to the community.

To reach this milestone, there will be disruptions to the way you travel throughout spring and summer. Access to businesses in the area will also change.

Racecourse Road long term closure

From 7am, Tuesday 30 September to mid-December we’ll close Racecourse Road between Cameron Way and Henry Street.

Detours in place via Princes Highway, McGregor Road and Princes Freeway with delays of up to 20 minutes expected.

Bald Hill Road and Racecourse Road changed traffic conditions

From 7am, Monday 6 October until mid-February 2026, Bald Hill Road will be closed on the eastern side of Racecourse Road as we work to build the new intersection.

Detours in place via Princes Highway, McGregor Road and Princes Freeway with delays of up to 20 minutes expected.

To help drivers travel through the area while Bald Hill Road is closed on the eastern side of Racecourse Road, drivers will be able to turn left-in/left-out and right-in/right-out to move between Peet Street and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road.

Impacts to bus services

While Racecourse Road is closed between Cameron Way and Henry Street from 7am, Tuesday 30 September to mid-December bus routes 840, 927 and 929 will not operate down Racecourse Road, Atkins Street, Irving Road, Barrington Drive and Cameron Way.

Bus services will detour using Henry Street and John Street, with temporary bus stops in place.

Impacts to pedestrian footpaths

While Racecourse Road is closed between Cameron Way and Henry Street from 7am, Tuesday 30 September to mid-December the footpaths on Racecourse Road over Pakenham Creek will be closed.

Detours will be in place via the footpath in the Ascot Estate and Simon Drive or via the temporary path at Pakenham Creek.

At times, we may need to close paths due to wet weather. When this happens a shuttle bus service will operate between 6am and 8pm to help pedestrians cross the creek, with expected waiting times of up to 20 minutes.
