What’s been happening
New traffic light intersections open on Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road
We’ve opened new traffic light intersections at the Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road freeway interchange, replacing the old roundabouts on both sides of the Princes Freeway and marking the end of major works on Stage 1 of the Pakenham Roads Upgrade.
These upgraded intersections will improve traffic flow and make it easier for drivers to get on and off the freeway. Both bridges over the Princes Freeway are also open, with 2 lanes in each direction between Peet Street and Southeast Boulevard.
Together with the recently completed Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road Upgrade, there are now 2 lanes for over 10 km in each direction from Peet Street in Pakenham to Manks Road in Koo Wee Rup.
Asphalting complete on McGregor Road
We’ve laid the top layer of asphalt on McGregor Road to cover:
- the upgraded McGregor Road/Henry Road/Webster Way intersection
- new lanes between the Princes Freeway and upgrade intersection
- the widened northern freeway roundabout and Warragul-bound exit ramp.
New lanes open on Princes Freeway
Following works to lay the top layer of asphalt on the Princes Freeway in November and December, the newly built lanes between McGregor Road and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road have opened.
Drivers now have 3 lanes in each direction on the freeway between the upgraded interchange on Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road and the new ramps built on McGregor Road.
Racecourse Road Upgrade progress
Throughout November and December, we’ve continued to relocate underground services, including power, water and telecommunications. Works have also begun to set up site compounds for workers and storage of equipment and materials.

What's coming up
McGregor Road
By the end of March 2025 we’ll finish upgrading the citybound freeway entry ramp with a third lane and traffic lights to manage traffic joining the freeway.
To complete these works, we’ll close the ramp from 9:30am Tuesday 14 January 2025 until early March.
Drivers travelling towards the city can detour via Southeast Boulevard and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road to use the recently upgraded freeway interchange, or via Henry Road to enter the freeway from Cardinia Road. Please plan for delays of up to 10 minutes.
Racecourse Road Upgrade
With major works starting in early 2025 to upgrade Racecourse Road, we’ll spend January relocating underground services, including power, water and telecommunications.
From early February we’ll start restricting some traffic movements around Bald Hill Road, so we can start working on the lanes that will form part of the upgraded traffic light intersection.
To minimise disruptions, the Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road and Peet Street intersection will operate temporarily with right turns allowed out of Peet Street.
From February until mid-2025, Bald Hill Road will have the following arrangements:
- closed to westbound travel between O’Sullivan Street and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road, with eastbound travel only
- between Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road and Webster Way, westbound travel will be restricted to local access for businesses only, with through traffic encouraged to use Henry Street. There will be speed reductions and reduced width on the westbound lane of Bald Hill Road, with left turns in and out of businesses.
