We’re upgrading Racecourse Road between Henry Street and Peet Street. The upgrade will build on benefits provided by the Stage 1 (Princes Freeway Interchange Upgrade), and other Big Build projects, the Level Crossing Removal Project and Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road Upgrades.

The Racecourse Road Upgrade includes:

  • adding an extra lane on Racecourse Road between Peet Street and Henry Street
  • upgrading the intersection at Bald Hill Road by replacing the roundabout with traffic lights
  • upgrading the intersection at Railway Avenue and Campbell Street by adding traffic lights
  • improving bus connections by reopening Railway Avenue for buses only to access the new Pakenham Station
  • building new walking and shared use paths improving safety for pedestrians and cyclists and completing the missing link between Healesville-Koo Wee Rup Road in the south and the new Pakenham Station in the north
  • improving road safety by adding a centre median and safety barrier along Racecourse Road between Bald Hill Road and Railway Avenue, with access to businesses becoming left in and left out only.

The upgrade will:

  • reduce travel times and increase traffic flow
  • improve access to the freeway network and local industrial areas
  • make it easier and safer for you to walk and cycle in the area.

Timeline

Project Status

We’re currently working to refine the project design, to ensure the best outcome for road users, the local community and the surrounding environment.

From mid-2024, you may see our crews conducting early works such as service proving and geo-technical surveys. Later in 2024 we’ll begin relocating utility services in preparation for major construction in January 2025.
