With construction of SRL East underway, we're working closely with residents and businesses to manage potential impacts. We have been carefully planning our works to reduce disruption and minimise impacts on the local community.
Maintaining air quality is important for public health and our environment. The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) measures air pollution (Airwatch) that already exists in the air at monitoring stations located within metropolitan Melbourne.
Our project contractors use air quality monitors on all construction sites to monitor, in real time, the effectiveness of control measures so we are able to respond to any irregularities. For example, if a plume of dust occurs due to unforeseen weather conditions, the construction team may respond by watering the source of the dust to reduce emissions.
Contractors also use air quality monitors to measure the concentrations of PM10, representing small particles in the air potentially generated by construction-related activities.
By reviewing these results against publicly available EPA monitoring data and comparing these against the EPA air quality objectives (Environment Reference Standard), the contractor can identify when construction works are impacting local air quality and respond on site.
At the end of each reporting month, the contractor provides a summary report of the 24-hour average PM10 concentrations, compared with the EPA air quality objectives.
