A rail link to Melbourne Airport has taken another major step forward, with the next stage of the project set to kick off.
Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 2 will see a new rail line built between Albion and Keilor East and a brand-new station at Keilor East, giving passengers direct access to Metro Tunnel services and key employment precincts across the city.
The 7.4km rail line will be built alongside the Jacana freight corridor and include 1.1km of elevated rail near Albion Station, building Victoria’s second highest bridge to take trains over the Maribyrnong River, and high-capacity signalling to enable frequent airport services.
The new station at Keilor East will provide new transport access to an estimated 5200 passengers a day when the rail line to the airport is completed.
The new station will be built with a car park and bus interchange to improve transport connections and enable fast and easy access to the Metro Tunnel and Melbourne’s CBD.
Site investigations, procurement and development works will begin in the coming weeks, followed by community engagement next year.
Major construction will start in 2028 and finish in 2031, when trains will run to Keilor East for the first time.
The project will be delivered in tandem with major works already underway as part of Melbourne Airport Rail Stage 1, due to be completed in 2030.
Stage 1 will untangle 6km of track between West Footscray and Albion and transform Sunshine Station into a 6-platform superhub, creating capacity for 1000 trains a day, including future trains to the airport and electric trains to Melton.
