North East Link is more than just a road project – we’re bringing 5 big projects together, changing the way people move around Melbourne by road, bus and bike.
North East Link will connect the Ring Road in Greensborough to an upgraded Eastern Freeway in Bulleen, build Melbourne’s first dedicated busway and create a North East Trail with more than 34km of walking and cycling paths.
Getting ready for the North East Link Tunnels
Works are in full swing as we prepare for major construction of the North East Link Tunnels. We’ve started setting up our site compounds from Watsonia to Bulleen to get ready for tunnelling to start in 2024.
In Watsonia, piling works have started on the foundations for the tunnel boring machine (TBM) launch box and we’re building new lanes on Greensborough Road to keep traffic moving alongside construction.
In Yallambie, we're making room for the simpler tunnel interchange at Lower Plenty Road and bringing large machinery and equipment on site to support tunnelling works.
As well as setting up work sites to support tunnelling in Bulleen, we’re also preparing to the build the new Manningham Road interchange. We’ll be moving lanes on Bulleen Road, to give us room to build the new tunnel entrances and Yarra Link green bridge, while keeping traffic moving on this busy road.
Also in Bulleen, construction of the new Bulleen Park & Ride – the first piece of the new Eastern Express Busway – will be complete in 2023.
