We’re connecting Doncaster Park and Ride to Melbourne’s first dedicated busway – the Eastern Busway improving public transport in Melbourne’s east.
To get ready for the new Eastern Busway to open in 2028, we're upgrading Doncaster Park and Ride with:
- new bus platforms
- improved services for passengers
- new walking and cycling connections
- a new Drop and Go zone
- a multi-level car park.
Combined with the new Bulleen Park and Ride, these improvements will double the number of car parking spaces for passengers using express bus services along the Eastern Freeway.
The Eastern Busway is part of a major overhaul of the Eastern Freeway – slashing travel times and easing congestion. The Eastern Busway will deliver faster, more frequent and more reliable trips to and from the city.
Making it easier to park, ride and walk
The upgrade to Doncaster Park and Ride together with improvements to Doncaster Road, and new walking and cycling paths, will improve connections for buses cars and pedestrians.
For quick drop-offs, new drop and go car parks on Hender Street will keep these trips out of the multi-level car park.
New paths along Doncaster Road and Hender Street will take pedestrians and cyclists through to the new forecourt, bicycle parking and bus platforms.
A new exit for the car park and traffic lights at Hender Street will provide greater separation between cars and buses. Cars won’t drive along the bus platform like they do today.
A rebuilt Doncaster Road bridge for the Eastern Freeway Upgrades will ease congestion along Doncaster Road and improve access for cars and buses entering the park and ride at the High Street lights.
Doncaster Park and Ride closed for upgrades
From 12 January 2025 until 2028, we’ll close the remaining car spaces at Doncaster Park and Ride for major upgrades to the park and ride and the Eastern Freeway.
As part of these works, a temporary Ringwood-bound entry ramp to the Eastern Freeway will be built to maintain access for freeway users while we build the new Doncaster Road bridge.
To prepare the site for major construction, we'll be installing barriers and fencing around the worksite, conducting site investigations to further understand ground conditions, relocating utility services, and constructing hard surfaces for cranes, piling rigs and other heavy machinery.
Catching buses during construction
To ensure locals can continue to access buses during construction of the new Doncaster Park and Ride from early 2025, the new Bulleen Park and Ride was built 4 years early.
With 370 parking spaces, drop and go bays, secure bicycle parking and improved walking and cycling connections to Koonung Creek Trail, locals will remain connected to bus services during works.
Buses will continue to run via the newly built temporary bus stops on Doncaster Road, between Hender/High Street and Harcourt Street, a 4-minute walk from the park and ride.
There will be changes to bus timetables from Sunday 12 January 2025. We encourage passengers to plan their journey. Further information, including revised bus timetables, will be available via ptv.vic.gov.au.
