Access changes

Point Cook Rd and Central Ave Intersection Upgrade

When the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade is complete, some local road and property access will be changed to left in and left out only.

When we upgrade main roads by adding new lanes, it’s important to restrict where cars can turn right (across multiple lanes) into or out of driveways and side roads.

Restricting right-hand turns improves safety for road users and lowers the risk and severity of crashes. It also greatly improves traffic flow by directing traffic to designated intersections, preventing drivers from attempting risky and uncontrolled movements.

There will be permanent access changes at Fitzpatrick Drive and Lunn Court, and also for some properties on Point Cook Road.

In late 2024 and early 2025, we conducted door knocks of residents on Point Cook Road, Fitzpatrick Drive, Ayr Street and Lunn Court, who will be directly impacted by these permanent access changes. If a resident was not at home at the time of our doorknocks, we put letters about the changes in their mailbox.

Safe U-turn locations

As part of the Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Intersection Upgrade, new turning arrangements are being introduced to support safer and smoother travel through the area. Dedicated U‑turn locations will help drivers access nearby streets and properties while reducing the need to turn across multiple lanes of traffic.

Safe U‑turns will be available at:

  • Point Cook Road and Central Avenue intersection (new traffic lights)
  • Shane Avenue and Seabrook Boulevard (roundabout).

Once the upgrade is complete, some journeys may involve using these U‑turn locations to reach your destination. These changes are designed to support safer and more reliable movements for everyone using the road.

Safer turning movements and smoother traffic flow

Centre medians support smoother traffic flow by reducing the need for vehicles to turn right across oncoming traffic into driveways or side streets.

Without a median, drivers often have to stop in traffic lanes while waiting for a safe gap to turn, which can slow traffic and create delays for vehicles behind them.

By separating traffic movements, centre medians help keep vehicles moving more consistently, reducing congestion and minimising stop‑start travel.

Drivers can instead use designated U‑turn locations at the new intersection or nearby roundabout, supporting safer movements, improving traffic flow and reducing the risk of rear‑end crashes caused by sudden stopping.

Safer direct driveway access

The safest way to access your property is left in, left out. When the road upgrade is complete, you may have to travel slightly further to access the new traffic lights or roundabout. However, your journey will be safer and more reliable.
