Project update

Point Cook Road and Central Avenue Upgrades

Disruptions

Upcoming works

What we’re doing and when

From 10pm, Sunday 28 June until mid-September, we’ll close the Point Cook Road bridge over the Princes Freeway in both directions. This closure allows crews to safely build the central part of the new intersection.

We’ll work Monday to Saturday, between 7am and 10pm. We’ll also need to work at night at times. We’ll let nearby residents and businesses know ahead of time if they’re likely to be impacted.

These works are weather dependent. If our plans change, we’ll let you know in advance.

How will this work affect you?

Traffic impacts

From 10pm Sunday 28 June to 5am Monday 29 June, the full intersection, including the bridge, will be closed to prepare for the closure.

From 5am Monday 29 June, the bridge will remain closed until mid-September.

Additional travel times of up to 30 minutes are expected. Please allow extra time when travelling through the area.

Look out for electronic signs with live travel times to help you choose the best detour route, depending on your destination.

Please drive safely through these changed conditions and follow directions from our traffic controllers and on-road signs to help keep everyone safe.

Bridge open for pedestrians and bike riders

People walking and riding bikes can continue to use the bridge during these works. Please stay alert and follow directions from traffic controllers and on-road signs to move safely through the area.

Detailed closures and detours are listed below. Please check carefully if you travel through this area.

Further upcoming closures

We’ll have short term temporary closures during August and September 2026, including:

  • weekend full intersection closures
  • overnight full intersection closures
  • temporary closures of the Princes Freeway exit ramp to Point Cook Road/Central Avenue.

Dates will be confirmed as works progress and we’ll let you know ahead of time

40km/h through construction zones saves lives

The speed limit on Point Cook Road between the Princes Freeway and Carinza Avenue, and on Central Avenue between Point Cook Road and Bruce Comben Reserve has been changed to 40km/h while we build the upgrade, to keep you and our workers safe.

We’ve reduced the speed limit to 40km/h because, even when we’re not working, there are still risks associated with reduced lane widths, concrete safety barriers and deep excavations behind barriers.

When driving near a construction site, there may be humps and drops in the road and soft road surfaces, which may increase risks for drivers. Some of these dangers may be easy to spot during the day, but much harder at night.

Research shows that the fatality rate drops considerably when speeds are reduced from 60km/h to 40km/h. These changes on Point Cook Road and Central Avenue are all about getting you and our workers home safe.

Noise and vibration

There will be some noise and vibration during construction. Noise and vibration may be generated from moving vehicles, machinery, digging trenches, rock breaking, reversing beepers or generators used to power equipment.

We’ll monitor noise, vibration, light and dust levels to ensure these impacts are kept to a minimum, especially at night.

If works are expected to be noisy, we’ll let nearby residents and businesses know in advance.
