Access changes

Yan Yean Road Upgrade

We’re upgrading Yan Yean Road between Kurrak Road and Bridge Inn Road, making it safer for more than 24,000 drivers who use this road every day.

At the new intersection of Yan Yean Road, Bridge Inn Road and Doctors Gully Road, our design is largely finalised and major construction is well underway. We’re working with our preferred contractor across the rest of the project area to improve the original concept design previously shared with the community. Our latest improvements are detailed below.

Changes to the way you travel

As part of the upgrade, there will be changes to the way you access properties and intersecting roads across Yan Yean Road. Once the upgrade is complete, access to most local roads and properties will be changed to left-in and left-out only. Right turns and U-turns will only be possible at nearby signalised intersections or dedicated U-turn bays and roundabouts. While you may need to travel slightly further to U-turn and get where you need to go, these changes will create a safer, quicker and more reliable journey overall.

We may need to implement temporary access changes  at times so we can complete the upgrades safely and maintain traffic flow.

We’ll upgrade several intersections along Yan Yean Road to improve safety, while ensuring you can continue to get where you need to go. Regular passenger vehicles like cars and utes will be able to U-turn in one or both directions at every upgraded intersection, while dedicated U-turn facilities will be built for larger vehicles like semi-trailers and cars with a towed load.

The intersection improvements include:

  • Signalised intersections at North Oatlands Road, Ironbark Road, Bannons Lane, Yarrambat Park, Jorgensen Avenue, Orchard Road, Activity Way, and Bridge Inn Road
  • New roundabouts at Heard Avenue and Youngs Road, which provide U-turn facilities for large vehicles.

All other intersections and properties on Yan Yean Road will change to left-in and left-out only access, including the Yarrambat Park Golf Course. Directing traffic to key intersections with dedicated turning lanes will reduce the risk of collisions from uncontrolled right turns, improving safety and traffic flow.

Doreen Business Precinct

Once the upgrade is complete, you will be able to access the Doreen Business Precinct on the south west corner of Old Yan Yean Road and Bridge Inn Road by:

  • a dedicated left turn from Yan Yean Road for northbound vehicles
  • a signalised right turn from Bridge Inn Road
  • a signalised intersection of Yan Yean Road and Activity Way.

Vehicle access from the precinct to:

  • Bridge Inn Road will be provided by left turn only
  • Yan Yean Road to travel southbound or northbound will be provided at the new Yan Yean Road and Activity Way signalised intersection
  • Yan Yean Road to travel northbound only will be provided from Old Yan Yean Road.

Cyclists and pedestrians will be able to safely access the Doreen Business Precinct from the new walking and cycling path along the western side of Yan Yean Road.

Activity Way

Use the new signalised intersection on Yan Yean Road to turn left or right into Activity Way.

Heavy vehicles and passenger vehicles can use the new U-turn bay at the Activity Way intersection to travel south on Yan Yean Road.

Jorgensen Avenue

Jorgensen Avenue will be upgraded with new traffic lights, improving safety at this key intersection. The original design for the intersection included a U-turn bay to allow longer vehicles such as horse floats travelling towards Doreen to turn back towards Plenty. However, upgraded access to Yarrambat Park means we’ve been able to remove this U-turn bay. Longer vehicles will instead be able to make the same U-turn movement further up the road at Activity Way.

Cars travelling towards Plenty will be able to use the new intersection to U-turn back towards Doreen. If you’re driving towards Doreen, you’ll be able to U-turn at the new traffic lights at Yarrambat Park or Activity Way to travel back towards Plenty.

Yarrambat Park

We’ll upgrade the entrance to Yarrambat Park to a new signalised intersection, allowing drivers to turn right or left to enter or exit the park. This will make it easier to reach the various community clubs that operate from the park, especially for horse floats travelling to and from Yarrambat Horse and Pony Club.

Access to the Yarrambat Golf Course will be left-turn in and left-turn out only, with the closest U-turns available at Youngs Road and Bannons Lane.

Bannons Lane to Laurie Street

We’ve added a service road  for properties on the eastern side of Yan Yean Road between Bannons Lane and Laurie Street. This will make it safer for drivers to enter and exit those properties, while reducing traffic interruptions on Yan Yean Road.

Other service roads have also been included near Kurrak Road and between Vista Court and Ashley Road for similar reasons.

Temporary access changes

There will be some changes to side streets along Yan Yean Road until late 2027  , while we work through the first stages of building new lanes and paths.

Ironbark Road

We’ll close a section of footpath on the eastern side of Yan Yean Road between Ironbark Road and Youngs Road.   Pedestrians can cross Yan Yean Road using a temporary signalised pedestrian crossing to use the footpath on the western side of the road, before crossing back at the Ironbark Road traffic lights.

Ashley Road

We’ll combine the left and right turn lanes from Ashley Road to Yan Yean Road into one lane to make room for construction works .

Golf Links Drive

We’ll close the right-turn lane from Yan Yean Road into Golf Links Drive to make room for construction barriers on the side of the road. Drivers heading to Golf Links Drive will need to detour by turning right into Bannons Lane and using Jeffrey Drive.
