Great places to dine, discover and celebrate Lunar New Year
It’s time to welcome the Year of the Dragon – a symbol of power, strength and luck.
From mouth-watering meals to spectacular fireworks, there’s plenty to see and do in the neighbourhoods around the Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East stations in Cheltenham , Clayton , Monash , Glen Waverley , Burwood and Box Hill .
Lunar New Year celebrations began on Saturday 10 February and run for around two weeks. It’s a great time to explore your area and support local traders.

Local Chinese artist Baoxian Du is showcasing 3 major photographic series at Box Hill Town Hall. See her portraits of newly arrived residents of Whitehorse who share what Lunar New Year means to them, as well as Box Hill photographs and powerful self-portraits. Free exhibition until March.
A popular destination for traditional Chinese meals, snacks and drinks. A highlight is the chicken congee, and pork and prawn dumplings are not to be missed. Find them in Box Hill Central's South Food Court, Monday to Friday.
Glen Waverley The Glen Waverley Lunar New Year and Lantern Festival is a spectacle of music, dance, traditional food and activities. A free, family-friendly event along the vibrant Kingsway. Sunday 18 February, 11am to 9pm.
To dine a little differently, head to The Roe specialising in fresh sea urchin - including the signature dish, sea urchin dumplings. Gather around the Abalone Urchin Yee Sang with family or friends and toss into the air with chopsticks – the higher the toss, the more luck for the New Year. Start a new family tradition at Hong Kong Dim Sum – a restaurant all about keeping tradition alive. Delivering handmade dim sum to hungry locals since 2001, using recipes from across the globe with founder Kong Choi Leung. Kingsway, Glen Waverley.
Burwood A 2-week celebration at Burwood Brickworks will feature captivating dragon and lion dances with drum and gong performances. Use a custom claw machine to win prizes from local retailers, hang your New Year wishes on the wishing tree, or bring the kids to enjoy a variety of themed crafts. Lunar New Year activities will run for 2 weeks.
Monash Celebrate the Year of the Dragon in style at Ginger Restaurant at the Parkroyal Monash Melbourne. Indulge in Southeast Asian cuisine including crispy pork belly boa and stir fried lobster, with set menus to celebrate Lunar New Year.
