The SRL East station at Burwood will deliver better access to Deakin University for thousands of staff and students and connect locals to Melbourne’s train network – providing faster and more convenient access to key destinations across Melbourne.

A new tram stop right outside the SRL station on Burwood Highway will make interchanges quick and easy.

Frequent services every few minutes will mean passengers can turn up and go when the new rail line is operating by 2035. It’ll take just 3-4 minutes between stations – a journey from Burwood to dinner in Glen Waverley will take just 5 minutes.

What's happening now

Early construction on SRL East started in June 2022 and is powering ahead.

Planning for the area around the new underground station at Burwood is now in its early stages, in consultation with the local council and community.

From 3 December 2023 to 3 March 2024, we sought community feedback on the draft precinct visions for the areas around each new SRL East station. These draft visions build on the priorities and feedback gathered over several years. The draft visions identify areas of opportunity, preliminary ideas and draft precinct plans that connect the place today to what it could look like in the future.

Thank you to everyone who provided feedback via the online survey. A report summarising what we heard and how it is being considered will be released in the coming weeks.

We are continuing to refine the precinct plans to ensure the SRL East precincts are thriving centres with quality housing options, services and job opportunities close to home.

SRL will be back out in the community shortly to get your feedback on the next steps being taken to realise the vision for Burwood.

The station layout at Burwood will incorporate a 94m long platform with escalators in the middle of the platform.

A pedestrian overpass will connect the station to the northern side of Burwood Highway and Deakin University.

The station will include buildings to accommodate ticketing and customer facilities and potential retail tenancies, operational equipment and rail systems, and essential emergency and safety infrastructure.

Burwood will feature a pedestrian overpass over the Burwood Highway providing an improved north-south connection across Burwood Highway. There will be a dedicated pick-up and drop-off area with 11 bays, and a new bus interchange adjacent to the station on Sinnott Street. There will be 750 bike parking spaces as well as new cycling paths. A 3m wide shared cycling will run along the western boundary of the precinct and connect Gardiners Creek Trail to Bennettswood Reserve, with a cycle crossing at Burwood Highway leading onto Deakin University.

The new station platform will sit around 18m below ground level and be accessible by lifts and escalators.
