The SRL East station at Box Hill will be one of the busiest and most well-connected stations on the metropolitan network – making it easier and faster to access the area’s thriving retail, education and health services.

The station will provide a convenient connection to the existing Box Hill Station on the Belgrave/Lilydale line and will have convenient links to local tram and bus services – connecting more people to jobs, healthcare and study opportunities in one of Melbourne’s fastest growing education and medical precincts.

Frequent services every few minutes will mean passengers can turn up and go when the new rail line is operating by 2035. It’ll take just 3-4 minutes between stations – a journey for a student travelling from Box Hill to Monash University will take just 12 minutes.

What's happening now

Crews have started building a temporary bridge in the middle of Whitehorse Road. Motorists, cyclists and pedestrians will be diverted onto the bridge to keep traffic flowing as we build the SRL East station underneath the road.

We’re also moving more underground services and utilities to make way for construction of the new station and twin tunnels.

What's next?

After the most recent rounds of extensive consultation, the final vision for Box Hill will be publicly available later this year. This will outline the ideas and opportunities for the area around the new station, informed by feedback from the community, local councils and stakeholders. The draft Structure Plans will go on public exhibition in later 2024 or early 2025, before public hearings by an independent panel in 2025.

It is anticipated Structure Plans and planning scheme amendments for these areas will be finalised in 2026.
