The dangerous and congested level crossing at Balcombe Road, Mentone was removed in 2020.

The rail has been lowered into a trench, with the road rebuilt at its existing level.

This coincided with the removal of the crossings at nearby Park and Charman roads in Cheltenham. All 3 level crossings are now gone for good.

The new Mentone Station opened in July 2020. The existing heritage-listed station can be found as part of a new ‘heritage bridge’ over the rail line. The new station location integrates with the Mentone Renaissance project.

The project also included more than 3km of walking and cycling paths connecting the Mentone and Cheltenham station precincts, improved lighting, accessibility and car parking.
