Traffic disruptions in the CBD - Victoria’s Big Build

Victoria’s Big Build

Major construction is now complete on Town Hall Station and State Library Station within the CBD.

Some works are still taking place around the new stations that will have impacts on road and pedestrian traffic.

Town Hall Station

Road users

Flinders Street eastbound lanes closed between Swanston and Degraves streets.
Flinders Street westbound lanes closed between Swanston and Degraves streets.
Flinders Street southern footpath adjacent to the Federation Square site closed, with pedestrian diversions in place through Federation Square.
Left turning lane from St Kilda Road to Flinders Street closed.

Pedestrians

Temporary holding of traffic on Flinders Lane, Swanston, and Collins streets for up to 3 minutes for deliveries.
Ongoing use of boom gate and swing gate controls to pedestrian traffic on Swanston and Collins streets.
Intermittent stopping of pedestrians on the corner of Swanston Street and Flinders Lane.

State Library Station

Road users

Swanston Street northbound between La Trobe and Little La Trobe streets is currently a shared lane for vehicles and cyclists.
Literature Lane eastern entrance closed. Access maintained via the western entrance.
A'Beckett Street closed between Swanston and Stewart streets.
Stewart Street currently 1-way only in a southbound direction.

Groundwater monitoring

Intermittent overnight lane closures on Victoria, Franklin, Swanston, A’Beckett, Therry and Queensberry streets for groundwater monitoring. Traffic management will be in place to safely guide cyclists and motorists around the work areas.

Pedestrians

La Trobe Street northern footpath closed directly adjacent to the work site.
Intermittent partial closures of the Swanston Street western footpath are required between La Trobe and A'Beckett streets. Through access for pedestrians and access to businesses is being maintained .

Groundwater monitoring

Intermittent partial footpath on Victoria, Franklin, Swanston, A’Beckett, Therry and Queensberry streets for groundwater monitoring. Traffic management will be in place to safely guide pedestrians around the work areas.

Other works in the area

The following non-Metro Tunnel works are occurring in the coming months around our stations and may cause traffic impacts:

Lendlease will commence work on Town Hall Place, the over station development being built at the Flinders Quarter site.
Scape will commence work on their over station development at the corner of La Trobe and Swanston streets.
