The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication is part of the staged upgrade of the Geelong Line and will deliver more frequent and reliable services and better stations for passengers on the Victoria’s busiest regional rail line.

Other projects include the Waurn Ponds Station Upgrade and stabling facility at Waurn Ponds, which will deliver better and more frequent services for the communities between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds.

Project overview

The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication includes:

Project benefits

The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication will enable more services and improved reliability on the Geelong Line.

The project will deliver the critical upgrades needed between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds to enable 5 train services per hour during the peaks and 3 per hour during the peaks for Marshall and Waurn Ponds stations.

Duplicating the line will also help services recover more quickly from delays, with trains able to pass each other in this section.

Passengers using South Geelong and Marshall stations will benefit from upgraded facilities, including improved accessibility. Both stations will feature a new station building, second platform, track and pedestrian overpass.

Level crossings at Fyans Street and Surf Coast Highway will be removed and replaced with an elevated rail bridge, boosting safety for train passengers and motorists that use these level crossings each day.

New shared user paths will link existing trails and paths and create a continuous connection for cyclists and pedestrians between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds for the first time.

Next steps

Community consultation is now underway, with locals and passengers able to provide feedback on key aspects of the project, including the early concept designs for the level crossing removals and station upgrades.

Expressions of Interest (EOI) for contractors to deliver the project closed in March. Shortlisted bidders from the EOI process have been announced, with two consortia selected to provide detailed proposals to deliver the project.

The shortlisted bidders are CUBG, comprising CPB Contractors, UGL, Beca and GHD, and the Djilang Alliance, comprising McConnell Dowell, Downer, Arup and WSP Australia.

The contract for the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication is planned to be awarded by mid-2022, with construction expected to start in late 2022 and completion targeted for late 2024.
