The construction of a new train maintenance and stabling facility at Waurn Ponds is required to support much-needed additional services on the Geelong Line.

The Waurn Ponds stabling facility will include:

  • 6 stabling train tracks
  • connections to the main train line
  • signalling and communication systems
  • CCTV and lighting
  • a building to support operations and amenities for staff
  • staff car parking
  • asphalt footpaths and sealed roadways.

Why is train stabling needed at Waurn Ponds?

The community of greater Geelong needs an efficient and reliable rail service to support its development as Victoria’s second biggest city. The Geelong Line is the fastest growing and busiest line on the regional rail network.

Stabling is needed at Waurn Ponds to support planned improvements for the Geelong Line, including the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication, Geelong Fast Rail and the completed Waurn Ponds Station upgraded.

Project benefits

Stabling at Waurn Ponds will allow more frequent and reliable train services to be introduced on the line in the future.

In addition to the extra services the new stabling will allow, it will also deliver an economic boost for the region, creating job opportunities when the full facility is in operation.

The facility is planned to be built in stages, with Stage 1 comprising capacity to store and refuel 6 trains.

Next steps

Construction of the first stage of the stabling facility is underway, and is being delivered by Downer as part of the contract for the Geelong and Warrnambool line upgrades.

Major earthworks and construction of the service buildings are continuing, with track installation to commence in coming months.

The stabling facility will allow VLocity trains to be housed overnight, providing much-needed storage capacity to support the additional services which will be enabled by the major upgrades underway along the line.
