A new dedicated regional platform will be built at Sunshine Station to enable more regional services to stop at the station, improving access for regional travellers to Melbourne Airport Rail and Metro Tunnel services, and the Sunshine area.

In addition to the new platform on the western side of Sunshine Station, upgrades include:

  • improved landscaping
  • car parking
  • kiss and ride facilities
  • safe access for travellers with mobility impairments, and
  • easier transitions for rail replacement bus services when required.

Overview

Sunshine Station is a key transport interchange in Melbourne’s west, with 4 platforms currently hosting more than 350 metro and regional services each weekday.

A pipeline of major rail investments for the west – including the Metro Tunnel, Melbourne Airport Rail, Suburban Rail Loop and the Western Rail Plan – will all contribute to Sunshine Station’s transformation into a transport superhub.

This means better facilities, more trains and more travel options, with services available to Melbourne Airport, Victoria’s western regions, Southern Cross Station via Footscray, and Melbourne’s CBD through the new Metro Tunnel.

The new regional platform dedicated to regional services will allow more services to stop at Sunshine Station, improving connectivity between the regions, airport and Melbourne’s booming west.

Scope

Proposed scope as part of these works include:

  • a new dedicated third platform for regional trains, bringing the total number of platforms at the station to 5
  • new track for regional trains within the rail corridor, located generally between Matthews Hill Reserve and City Place, Sunshine
  • an upgrade to the car park on the western side of the station
  • a new, safer pedestrian underpass at the Hampshire Road bridge, replacing the existing underpass
  • an extension of the existing station concourse
  • landscaping and beautification of the precinct, including near the western car park and City Place shops.
