Elevated road above Footscray Road

Building faster and safer connections

We are building an elevated road running above the centre of Footscray Road. The road will allow for faster and safer travel between the tunnels and CityLink, Dynon Road, Footscray Road and Wurundjeri Way by joining to new bridges over the Maribyrnong River, providing a vital second river crossing for drivers.

The elevated road will run above the centre of Footscray Road, running from the Maribyrnong River to CityLink.

The port

Connections for the freight industry will be improved with direct access to the port via ramps at Mackenzie Road and Appleton Dock Road.

Constructing the elevated road

The road structure will be built from concrete segments which are made off-site and transported to site by truck.

A gantry crane, which will sit on top of support piers around 30m above the road, will lift the concrete segments into place.

The crane will start at the city end of Footscray Road and work its way west building the outbound carriageway before being turned around to build the city bound carriageway.

Our gantry crane will place almost 1600 segments into place over a two-year period.

Veloway

The project will also build a new 2.5km elevated ‘veloway’ on Footscray Road, giving cyclists a safe express route to and from the city and supporting the growing number of Melburnians riding to work each day.
