Wurundjeri Way extension

We are extending Wurundjeri Way over Dudley Street to create a city bypass, removing through traffic from the CBD including Spencer and King Street.

We will also widen Wurundjeri Way to 3 lanes in each direction, between Dudley Street and Flinders Street to cater to traffic volumes.

What we are building

The new Wurundjeri Way extension will provide a city bypass removing traffic from the CBD and provide greater connectivity between the north, city and western suburbs. A new bridge will be built over Dudley Street connecting it to Dynon Road east of Moonee Ponds Creek

In addition, an extra lane will be added to Wurundjeri Way in each direction between Dudley Street and Flinders Street increasing capacity.

Widening of Wurundjeri Way - building an extra lane in each direction between Dudley Street and Flinders Street.

Background

Wurundjeri Way currently runs through Docklands to the west of the city, providing a connection from Montague Street in South Melbourne via the Charles Grimes Bridge to Dudley Street in West Melbourne.

Vehicles travelling from the west currently have limited routes they can use to access the city. Routes include Footscray Road, Dynon Road and the West Gate Freeway via Montague Street. During peak periods, these roads often experience high levels of congestion.

Apart from the West Gate Freeway, the major routes accessing the city from the west are Footscray Road, Dynon Road and, to a lesser extent, Arden Street and Macaulay Road.

Travelling from the city

Drivers will be able to get to:

Tullamarine Airport via the new CityLink entry ramp
Hospitals and universities in Melbourne’s northern suburbs via the new exit ramp to Dynon Road.
the western suburbs via the new Wurundjeri Way extension, the elevated road over Footscray Road and through the West Gate Tunnel for more direct access to the West Gate Freeway.

Travelling to the city

Drivers coming from the west will be able to choose the following options:

Using the new twin tunnels the elevated road over Footscray Road and exit via the new Wurundjeri Way extension to get to the southern end of the CBD. This provides easy access to Marvel Stadium, Southern Cross station, Docklands and Southbank, while avoiding the CBD grid.
Using the West Gate Freeway and West Gate Bridge.
