Community and green spaces

What we’re delivering

  • more than 9km of new and improved noise walls for quieter homes, backyards and parks along the West Gate Freeway
  • a more direct connection from the West Gate Freeway to the CBD and CityLink, keeping thousands of trucks off 6 local roads
  • close to 9 hectares of new parks and wetlands
  • over 14km of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths
  • over 17,000 new trees and tens of thousands of native shrubs and grasses
  • enhanced waterway environments, with wetlands to help naturally treat stormwater
  • $10 million worth of funding for community-led organisations, projects and events through the West Gate Neighbourhood Fund
  • West Gate Kids, a school engagement program designed to help children of diverse backgrounds develop key skills.

We also encourage the community to get involved with the project through our Community Liaison Groups and other community events.

New parks and wetlands

Locals in the west will enjoy close to 9 hectares of new parks and wetlands, completely changing closed-off industrial land into spaces for communities to enjoy.

Planting over 17,000 trees

We’ll green the west, with over 17,000 trees and tens of thousands of shrubs and grasses being planted along the roads and around waterways and parks throughout the project corridor.

We’ll work with local councils, communities and environmental groups to identify indigenous and locally significant species to plant along the project corridor.

Improving local waterways

We’re helping build on the work of local groups to improve the health and habitat of creeks and waterways. Wetlands will be used to treat storm water naturally while new plantings will help rehabilitate creek banks and develop animal habitats.

Water sensitive design will be used with the natural treatment of stormwater run-off before it reaches waterways.

Sustainability during construction

The project will meet an ‘excellent’ Infrastructure Sustainability rating by reusing and recycling materials, minimising construction truck movements and using smart design and sustainable equipment and materials to reduce energy during operation.
