Locals and drivers in Melbourne’s east and south east will face disruptions in coming weeks, with Suburban Rail Loop (SRL) East works ramping up.
This includes the full closure of Clayton Road in Clayton until late October as crews undertake a blitz of works at the site of the new underground SRL station.
Crews will be moving underground utilities, demolishing buildings and starting to build 2 new open spaces on Haughton Road. The works are being undertaken together to minimise the overall impact to the community and reduce the time roads are impacted.
In Box Hill, Whitehorse Road will be closed overnight at times until late 2024 while crews move utilities and build a temporary bridging structure to keep traffic flowing along Whitehorse Road during construction of SRL East.
In Burwood, workers are moving underground services to make way for the new SRL station. Lanes on Burwood Highway will be closed until late 2024 and there will be full overnight closures in both directions at times.
Coleman Parade in Glen Waverley will also be closed from September until later in the year as crews pave the way for major construction of the new station, while in Heatherton, Old Dandenong Road will be permanently closed between Henry Street and Kingston Road from October to make way for the train stabling facility.
SRL East will deliver 6 new underground stations at Cheltenham, Clayton, Monash, Glen Waverley, Burwood and Box Hill. Construction is creating up to 8000 direct jobs, with more than 1400 people already working on the project. Tunnelling starts in 2026, with trains taking passengers in 2035.
