Overview

Planning is progressing for the Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade in Clyde North.

The upgrade aims to:

  • reduce travel times by increasing the capacity of the intersection to allow traffic to flow more efficiently
  • improve safety by reducing conflicting vehicle movements
  • cater to population growth and increased vehicle movements
  • improve walking and cycling infrastructure at the intersection to create more connected communities
  • build on the recent upgrades to Thompsons Road as well as upgrades of other key roads in the local area including O’Shea Road, Narre Warren-Cranbourne Road, and Clyde Road.

Planning and development

In our planning we’ve explored options to:

  • remove the existing roundabout and replace it with traffic lights
  • improve public transport infrastructure at the intersection
  • improve walking and cycling infrastructure at the intersection.

Development work has included traffic modelling, social studies and environmental investigations. This helped us to understand environmental and social impacts, develop design options, and confirm scope and costs of different options.

We’ve finished our development work and completed a business case. The business case examines the upgrade in detail to help inform government decision-making.

Community and business feedback

From 6 to 26 March 2023, we asked for community and local business feedback via Engage Victoria to help inform planning and shape development of design options for the upgrade. Thank you to everyone who took the time to provide feedback. More than 1,800 community and business surveys were completed, and over 90 pieces of feedback were provided on our interactive map.

Feedback has helped us understand how people currently use the intersection as well as views on safety, traffic flow and what we should consider in our planning. We also heard how local businesses operate and use the intersection.

Feedback highlighted strong support for a Thompsons Road and Berwick-Cranbourne Road Intersection Upgrade and that the roundabout should be converted to traffic signals to improve safety and reduce travel times.

  • 96% of community respondents and 95% of business respondents support an upgrade
  • 87% of community respondents have concerns with the current intersection. When asked what concerns they have (multiple choice), the top responses were traffic flow (78%), safety (70%), road user behaviour (58%), and travel times (49%)
  • 88% of community respondents rated traffic flow as poor or very poor, 9% said fair, and 3% said good or very good
  • 92% of community respondents rate the current walking and cycling paths at the intersection as very poor or poor.

Next steps

Planning work continues as the upgrade moves towards construction. Construction timelines will be known once our planning is further progressed.

In early 2024, we’ll be seeking feedback on the intersection upgrade’s scope and design to inform the upgrade’s planning approvals.

We’ll continue to provide you with updates and information as planning progresses.
