West Gate Freeway: Major works around Millers Road interchange

As part of the West Gate Tunnel Project, we’re widening the West Gate Freeway to create more capacity and reduce travel times. We are also upgrading key intersections to make it easier to get on and off the freeway.

From 19 August 2022 to late October 2022, our crews will be carrying out major works at the Millers Road interchange.

Getting the work done safely will require various 24/7 road and lane closures of Millers Road, freeway ramp closures at Millers Road and a short-term closure of Primula Avenue.

The closures will give our crews the space to work around the clock to:

  • rebuild pavements
  • install noise walls
  • build a walking and cycling path and
  • install traffic systems and drainage systems.

At Primula Avenue we’ll close the roads to:

  • complete kerbs
  • continue to construct pavement and build walking and cycling paths.

Paringa Road will be closed to carry out completion works in the area including:

  • removal and demolition of temporary noise walls
  • continue installing freeway technology systems
  • install new kerbing and asphalting
  • complete landscaping and other rectification works

Nearly all the West Gate Tunnel Project’s work around Millers Road will be completed at the end of October with some minor, less disruptive work to remain.

Detour routes will be signed. There will be speed reductions to ensure the safety of both road users and our crews. Avoid delays and check before you travel.

Millers Road interchange upcoming closures

The following ramps and roads will be closed and reopened in stages.

Residents, pedestrians and local businesses

Local businesses in the area will remain open and operating during these works and we encourage the local community and our workers to support these businesses.

Residents and businesses affected by these construction activities will be contacted by the project team directly and in advance.

Accessing local businesses along Millers Road

Pedestrian access under the West Gate Freeway along Millers Road will be maintained throughout these works.

Parking is available on the corner of Langshaw Street and Dousa Road, behind the Caltex petrol station and opposite Altona Gate Shopping Centre. This car park is open during business hours, and is a short walk for access to the shops.

Alternative parking is also available at Altona Gate Shopping Centre.

Beevers Street residents

Residents living on Beevers Street, and the streets coming off it, will have permanent access to their residences via the Millers Road Service Road. Workers will be present to guide them to their properties.

Residents travelling on Millers Rd northbound can do a u-turn at the traffic lights near the Millers Rd inbound entry ramp and proceed onwards to turn left onto Beevers Street.

Thank you for your patience

The most disruptive works are scheduled to coincide with the Victorian school holidays period when traffic volumes are lower, so that we can reduce the impact on road users. It also means we can complete some of the louder work during daylight hours to reduce impacts on nearby residents and businesses.

We know these construction works are disruptive and appreciate and thank the community for their patience. Keep up to date with these changes by
