About the project

The Metro Tunnel is an unprecedented upgrade of Melbourne’s train network, and Melbourne’s first major metropolitan rail investment since the City Loop opened in 1981. The project includes twin nine-kilometre tunnels that run from Kensington to South Yarra, and five new underground stations – Arden, Parkville, Anzac, Town Hall and the State Library Station.

It also includes a next-generation signalling system, allowing trains to run safely closer together, and bigger, better trains will run through the new tunnel, with 20 per cent more space. An extra half a million additional passengers will be able to travel each week during peak times across the rail network.

About the artwork

The Metro Tunnel Project is a massive feat of engineering that has been documented at every stage of its construction. These photographs reveal the hidden beauty of the construction process, rather than just the progress of works: the intricate details, challenges, and achievements of the project.

They have been taken by Misheye, Mighty Films, and Cross Yarra Partnership Design Construction.
