The Metro Tunnel Project has installed next-generation technology on Melbourne's rail network, to enable more frequent services when the Metro Tunnel opens in 2025.

Trains running through the tunnel will exclusively use new High Capacity Signalling (HCS) technology. Our new fleet of High Capacity Metro Trains (HCMTs) will use a mix of HCS and conventional signalling along the Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines.

Before we can run Metro Tunnel passenger services, we need to carry out a huge program of testing. This is to ensure all the new systems – including Victorian-first platform screen doors – are working together and are seamlessly integrated into the network.
