Artworks for the Legacy Artwork Program were commissioned by competitive curated shortlist as well as through open expressions of interest.
- The commissions for the Arden and State Library stations were by open calls for expressions of interest.
- The commissions for Parkville and Anzac stations were by a competitive curated shortlist.
- The line-wide commission was via expressions of interest from First Nations artists only.
We appointed an arts advisory panel to oversee the selections and provide expert advice about the suitability of artists for each commission.
The successful artists demonstrated extensive artistic experience and the skills to create artworks that are integrated with building architecture or interiors.
Public artworks have made metro stations must-see destinations in world cities such as London, Naples and Stockholm.
As Australia's cultural capital, where the creative industries contribute billions of dollars to the Victorian economy every year, it is fitting that we take the opportunity to include public art in Melbourne's new metro stations.
The artworks will complement the station architecture, provide Melburnians the opportunity to engage with world-class art every day, help to orientate commuters and help to establish a sense of place and identity for our new city landmarks.
