Construction snapshot for August and September 2022

Work at and around the Arden Station site during August and September involves:

  • Arden Station entrance construction
  • Station services building construction, equipment installation and fit out
  • Station concourse and equipment room construction
  • Mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) service installation, testing and commissioning
  • Tunnel and fit-out works including installation of walkways, brackets and track slab
  • North Melbourne electrical substation electrical works
  • Utility investigations on Arden, Laurens, Barwise and Queensberry streets
  • Utility and drainage installation, relocation and upgrade works on Arden, Barwise and Laurens streets
  • Concrete batching plant operation
  • Out of hours oversize deliveries to and from site
  • Surveying, and sampling and testing of groundwater and soil
  • Transportation of concrete from the batching plant to other Metro Tunnel Project construction sites.

Arden Station entrance construction

Arden Station site

Ongoing until late 2022

  • Removal of sections of the station box diaphragm walls (D-walls) to continue with station entrance structural works
  • Concrete pours for the entrance level slab and entrance walls
  • Waterproofing and screeding works on top of the station box
  • Backfilling soil over the station box
  • Station terrace underground services installation commences, followed by terrace concrete works. The future terrace will connect the entrance of the station to Laurens Street. Finishing surfaces and landscaped features will continue to be applied in 2023.

Arden Station services building construction and fit out

Ongoing until late 2022

  • Backfilling around the services building continuing. This will bring the area back to ground level to be compacted and asphalted
  • Installing internal wall linings
  • Rough-in for mechanical, electrical and plumbing work continuing
  • Painting continuing
  • Final back of house metalwork fit off.

Station build and fit out

Ongoing until late 2022

  • Skylight glazing installations
  • Ongoing lift shaft glazing and escalator installation
  • Floor screeding and isolation membrane to platform and concourse levels
  • Complete platform screen door (PSD) overhead steel framework installation
  • Installing metal cladding to platforms
  • Commencing acoustic ceiling installation
  • Ducting and ventilation installation and testing
  • Completing back of house wall lining and painting
  • Mechanical, electrical and security service installation
  • Some work at platform level will continue on night shifts, with activity to be localised within the station box.

Rail tunnel fit out

North Melbourne

Ongoing until mid-2023

  • Floating track slab delivery to site
  • Installing brackets, pipe works, steel walkways underway in tunnels
  • Cable pulling in tunnels
  • Fit out of cross passages ongoing
  • Work inside the tunnel will continue 24/7.

Utility investigation works

Laurens and Barwise streets, North Melbourne

Ongoing until late 2022

  • Service investigations will be undertaken intermittently in Laurens and Barwise streets
  • This involves the use of non-destructive digging (NDD) trucks to locate underground services and then reinstating the road surface and line marking
  • These activities are expected to generate periods of medium to loud noise
  • These works may include intermittent impacts to traffic, footpaths and on-street parking. See the traffic and transport impacts for further information.

Utility and drainage installation works

Laurens and Barwise streets

Ongoing until late 2022

  • CitiPower will continue their relocation works for power cables on Laurens Street and Barwise Street in August. These works will be notified separately by CitiPower.
  • Optus, Telstra and NBN will be conducting works to relocate telecommunication lines in Laurens and Barwise streets. These works will be notified separately by the relevant provider
  • Once these works are complete, Metro Tunnel will commence installing new drainage lines on Barwise Street and on Laurens Street between Arden and Queensberry streets
  • Barwise Street and Laurens Street between will remain open during these works with traffic management on hand to assist. Parking along the length of Barwise Street will be closed during these works.

North Melbourne electrical substation

North Melbourne

Ongoing until mid-2022

  • Final defects rectification, commissioning and testing of electrical systems and switch rooms.

Traffic and transport

  • Up to 150 trucks per day are expected to travel to and from site. Construction vehicles and trucks will access the site via Laurens and Arden streets
  • All trucks carrying excavated materials will be covered, and water carts and street sweepers will be used frequently to minimise the spread of dust
  • Rumble grids and a wheel wash have been installed to remove debris from the wheels and carriages of vehicles to minimise the spread of dirt on local road
  • Removal of on-street parking along the westbound lane of Barwise Street during utility and drainage works.
