Construction snapshot for March 2025
Construction works within the State Library Station precinct during March 2025 include:
- Main station entrance construction and underground fit-out works at the La Trobe, A’Beckett and Franklin Street sites
- Finishing works on the service buildings at the Little La Trobe Street site
- Fit-out of the underground passenger connection to Melbourne Central Station
- A’Beckett Street acoustic shed de-cladding in preparation for removal of the shed in April
- Capping beam removal works at the Franklin Street sites

Traffic and transport impacts
Road impacts
- La Trobe Street eastbound lanes closed between Elizabeth and Swanston streets. Vehicles detour via Lonsdale or Victoria streets, cyclists detour via Little Lonsdale Street.
- Swanston Street northbound between La Trobe and Little La Trobe streets is currently a shared lane for vehicles and cyclists.
- Little La Trobe Street closed between Swanston Street and Baskerville Lane. Enter and exit via Elizabeth Street.
- Literature Lane eastern entrance closed. Access maintained via the western entrance.
- A'Beckett Street closed between Swanston and Stewart streets.
- Stewart Street currently 1-way only in a southbound direction.
- Franklin Street closed between Swanston and Victoria streets.
- Franklin Street closed between Swanston and Stewart streets.
Pedestrian impacts
- La Trobe Street northern footpath closed directly adjacent to the work site.
- Swanston / La Trobe Street intersection pedestrian crossings closed between work site and Melbourne Central, and between work site and RMIT.
- Swanston Street western footpath closed adjacent to the La Trobe work site. Pedestrians walking northbound can use the eastern footpath, and pedestrians walking southbound can detour via Little La Trobe Street, then Baskerville Lane or Elizabeth Street.
- Little La Trobe Street northern footpath closed between Baskerville Lane and Swanston Street.
- Little La Trobe Street southern footpath between Swanston Street and Baskerville Lane closed as required from 8pm to 3am Monday to Fridays. Pedestrian access to the Scape building will be from Swanston Street only, and access to all other buildings on Little La Trobe Street will be from Elizabeth Street and Baskerville Lane only.
- Franklin Street southern and northern footpaths closed at times between Swanston and Victoria streets. Access to Melbourne City Baths DDA door maintained.
- Franklin Street southern and northern footpaths closed at times between Swanston and Stewart streets. Access to businesses maintained.
Groundwater monitoring
There will be intermittent partial footpath and overnight lane closures on Victoria, Franklin, Swanston, A’Beckett, Therry and Queensberry streets for groundwater monitoring. Traffic management will be in place to safely guide pedestrians, cyclists and motorists around the work areas.
